Cancer Genetics

If cancer appears to be prevalent in your family there may be a hereditary genetic link to blame. Patients known to be carriers of these types of genetic mutations should consider increased surveillance through cancer screening and possibly preventative surgeries to reduce the risk.

While the field of genetic testing is still in its infancy, today there are valuable genetic tests that can recognize mutations likely to cause breast, ovarian and colorectal cancers. Many primary care physicians and specialty physicians can facilitate genetic testing. Resources are also available at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center to assist by providing risk assessments, genetic counseling and testing if necessary.
