Renal Scan for High Blood Pressure or Captopril Renogram

A renal scan is a two-day procedure that will help determine if there is a narrowing in the artery to your kidney(s) causing high blood pressure.

Preparation:  Drink plenty of fluid so you are not dehydrated during the exam.

Procedure:  You will be asked to swallow a blood pressure pill.  After waiting one hour, the renal scan will be performed.  The scan will last 30 minutes.  You will be asked to return the following day for a 30-minute study.

The radiologist will study the images from your scan and send a report to your doctor.  Your doctor will discuss these results with you.
