Renal Scan for Infection or Tumors

A renal scan detects scarred kidneys caused by infection.  It will determine whether a mass in the kidney is normal or abnormal kidney tissue.

Preparation:  There is no preparation for this exam.

Procedure:  A tracer is injected in a vein followed by 30 minutes of imaging.  In some cases, sedation may be required for young children.

The radiologist will study the images of your scan and send a report to your physician who will discuss the results with you.
