VCUG (Voiding Cystourethrogram)

A voiding cystourethrogram is the study of your bladder showing how it empties and if there is any reflux in the ureters to the kidneys.

Preparation:  There is no special preparation for this study.  A catheter will be inserted in your bladder before the examination by one of the radiology nurses or technologists.

Procedure:  You will be asked to change into a hospital gown and taken to a X-ray room where you will be asked to lie on the table on your back and a scout film will be taken.  The catheter is then placed in your bladder.  The radiologist will introduce contrast material into the bladder, which will project on the fluoroscope.  He will watch your bladder fill and take films of your urinary system until the bladder is at its fullest.  At this time you will be asked to void into a special container, or for children, a padded area will be used.  While you are voiding, the radiologist will take a series of pictures of your bladder as it empties.  This exam usually takes 30 minutes.  The radiologist will send a report to your physician who will discuss the findings with you.
