About
the Tammy Walker Cancer Center
A
new beacon of hope now stands for those who battle cancer. The Tammy
Walker Cancer Center, in collaboration with community and regional
physicians, is poised to lead north central Kansas in the diagnosis and
treatment of cancer in a compassionate and healing environment.
Located at 511 South Santa Fe, just across the street from the
Salina Regional Health Center, the Tammy Walker Cancer Center is the
pinnacle in comprehensive cancer care and convenience.
Experts predict by the year 2010 cancer may surpass heart
disease as the leading cause of death in the United States. Currently,
cancer is the cause of one in every four deaths nationwide.
Three of Salina's oncology physicians, now base their
practices out of the cancer center in order to streamline care with
state-of-the-art equipment and medical technology to deliver cutting-edge
cancer treatment at a level usually only found at large research
institutions.
Larry
Beck, M.D., hematologist and oncologist, and William
Cathcart-Rake, M.D.,
medical oncologist, lead the medical oncology services of the cancer center,
while Claudia
Perez-Tamayo, M.D., provides radiation oncology.
The
support services needed to overcome the disease are also available under the
same roof. Under the guidance of a care coordinator, each newly
diagnosed patient is assisted through every aspect of the disease ranging
from physical and social needs to spiritual and psychological assistance.
Although Salina has always offered a comprehensive array of
cancer services, they were scattered among several locations.
Patients, who often battle cancer related fatigue, consistently voiced their
need to have cancer services in one location with parking nearby.
For that reason, the Tammy Walker Cancer Center was designed
to be more convenient for patients, with improved coordination of diagnostic
tests and treatment.
The Tammy Walker Cancer Center allows Salina to continue to
provide the same cutting-edge cancer treatment that is available at large
research hospitals, while at the same time continuing its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life for its patients - before, during and after
cancer treatment.
