Radiation Oncology Tour Consultation Before radiation treatments can be done, the Radiation Oncologist meets with the patient for a radiation therapy consultation. During this meeting, a physical examination is performed and a thorough discussion of treatment options based on the patient's history and cancer is held. Ample time is given to the patient to answer any questions that he or she might have. The key in this step is communication - between the doctor, patient and family. Simulation A "simulation" applies the plan that is designed for the person. Measurements and films are taken and marks are placed on the patient that will be used to center the radiation beams to the exact treatment place. In order to reproduce the exact position for daily treatment, certain devices may be made. In some, patient "contrast" barium is given. The simulation process lasts approximately 45 minutes. |

Treatment Planning The direction and amount of radiation received is based on the type and positions of the cancer in the body. The patient normally undergoes a treatment-planning CT ("CAT") scan through the area of the cancer. The radiation oncologist works with certified experts (radiation physicist and dosimetrist) to find the best treatment method possible. With the use of a special computer, a conformal 3-dimensional treatment plan is designed. This plan tailors the radiation beam to the unique shape of an individual's tumor area, while minimizing exposure to the surrounding normal structures (thus increasing cancer cell-kill, while reducing radiation side effects). The treatment-planning CT last about 20 minutes. Radiation Therapy Treatments A Radiation Therapist positions the patient on the linear a
